My recent body of work has been considering the connections between light, shadow and form. I have been creating three dimensional organic forms that are informed by decoration and ornament on architecture. Exhibiting these forms as large three dimensional patterns installed on the wall, I have been contemplating the connection of the vertical structure, the forms and the shadows and exploring a means in which to cleanly integrate these elements into a completely resolved installation. Through much consideration and trial I concluded that in order to cleanly integrate the form, shadow and structure, I had to design and develop the piece in a two dimensional format.
Documenting the forms while in situe, I then manipulate the images on the computer. By photography and digital manipulation, I have formulated a way in which to create large patterns while uniting the above elements in a harmonious manner.
I believe that this approach to ceramics is a new and dynamic way in which to keep the ceramic medium intact, yet allow the viewer to contemplate the source of the original photograph. Through this digital medium, my work becomes morphed and looses the three dimensional organic nature that the clay lends to the forms – I enjoy this. I want the viewer to be confused by the origin of the forms and question the material and processes in which they were initially created.
My objective is to create large scale prints that emphasize the effects that light and shadow can create. I hope to draw the viewer in; confuse and attract; and leave them to examine and consider the origin of these obscure forms and shadows.
